The Elizabeth Public Library is seeking a lively and personable Librarian I or II for an active and dynamic Children’s Services Department. Some supervisory experience preferred, but not necessary. Must love children and have a great sense of humor, and an appreciation for urban librarianship. The Elizabeth Public Library serves New Jersey’s 4th largest city with a budget of $4.3 million and a staff of 51 FTE. Our population is urban, immigrant, and diversified.

The successful candidate will: Under limited supervision, provide a variety of library services throughout our four-branch system, performing responsible and varied administrative and professional library work related to planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Children's Department, which serves patrons ranging in age from infants through grade 6. Reports to the Head of Children’s Services.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Trains and supervises staff and volunteers assigned to the Children's Department; makes job assignments and verifies that assignments are carried out properly
  • Schedules Children's Department staff and volunteers
  • Provides expert reference service to children, caregivers, educators and the general public, using the library catalog, databases and other appropriate online resources
  • Plans and conducts library programs such as library tours, book talks, film programs, reading clubs, etc. for toddlers, children and tweens
  • Determines content and arrangement of library material for displays, exhibits, and special library programs
  • Promotes and provides reader’s advisory services
  • Works collaboratively to evaluate new products and services
  • Writes and designs publicity, including contributing to a monthly newsletter and press releases to keep public and staff current with library events
  • Possesses experience using web-based applications such as Google Docs, Survey Monkey, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook
  • Works independently and in a collaborative environment
  • Conducts regular maintenance reports for lost, missing, and damaged items
  • Participates in planning and presenting public programs
  • Represents the library at community events
  • Identifies reading trends among junior patrons
  • Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings and reads professional literature to stay informed on issues related to children's library services
  • Serves on professional and community committees, as requested, to advance the library and the library profession
  • Readily undertakes other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements: A Master's degree in Library or Information Science in a library program accredited by the American Library Association or from a New Jersey College Master's Program in Library Science that has been deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison State College.

The Elizabeth Public Library is a Union shop, and governed by Civil Service Commission provisions. Must possess a broad understanding and appreciation of children’s literature, as gained through appropriate course work and/or experience. Bi-lingual skills appreciated. Must possess a genuine affection for and understanding of children. Hours: 35 hours a week, including two evenings and alternating Saturdays. Salary: $54,953-$63,213, depending on experience.
