The Newark Public Library is accepting applications for Youth Services Librarian. We are seeking kind, creative, and enthusiastic librarians who love to work with young people and their families. The Youth Services Supervising Librarian will work in the Main branch and be responsible for programming, outreach, reference, and collection development. Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Creating and overseeing a welcoming and inspiring library environment that is accessible and provides equitable services to a diverse population
  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Coordinates youth programs system wide
  • Developing and conducting fun, innovative, and educational children’s programming that reflects the community’s needs
  • Creating and delivering virtual programs, take home activities, and other remote engagement
  • Assisting patrons with reader's advisory, utilizing e-resources and working with digital devices
  • Enforcing and communicating library policies and procedures to the public and Youth Services staff
  • Working independently on various projects, while acting as a cooperative and productive team member
  • Supporting children with homework assignments
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with community organizations, schools, and the public
  • Selecting books and other library materials for collections and maintaining those collections
  • Managing special projects and performing other work as required
  • Acting as person in charge of the branch, as needed
  • Supervising clerical staff and volunteers, as needed
  • Preparing clear, accurate, and informative narrative and statistical reports

REQUIREMENTS: A Master's degree in Library or Information Sciences and a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate are required for appointment at the Librarian title. The successful candidates will have experience working with children or teens, excellent interpersonal communication skills, and a commitment to exemplary public service. Familiarity with children’s literature is an asset. This position requires New Jersey residency: N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).

SCHEDULE AND SALARY: These positions are full time at 35 hours per week. Benefits include 20 vacation days, 2 personal days, and 14 holidays. The regular schedule includes one evening per week and every other Saturday. Salary: $58,000.
